This week in the neighborhood, crime and safety has been a hot topic.
Neighbors surrounding McCoppin Hub are concerned about an increasing population of homeless encampments moving into the public plaza. Due to the vast number of complaints her office has received, District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim is moving forward with plans to install a fence and limit the plaza's hours.
Kim's office also debuted 300 streetlight banners across SoMa and the Tenderloin, aimed at convincing motorists to slow down and take notice of pedestrians.
In area, art news, Cartoon Art Museum has officially vacated its space in Yerba Buena. Just across Market Street in UN Plaza, however, the city has contracted a local artist to help develop a series of free events that aim to provide local artists and art organizations with more exposure.
On the food front, we sat down with Adam Mesnick, owner of Deli Board and Rye Project and longtime SoMa resident, to learn more about his new evening events (debuting tonight!) and thoughts on the evolving neighborhood.
Now that you're caught up, it's time to plan your weekend:
Thursday, September 17th
Deli Board, 1058 Folsom St.
6-9pm
Description: Deli Board will be open late, offering a crowd favorite, the Board Cheesesteak, as well as every item on the regular menu. BYOB.
Scintillating 16mm: Newly Preserved Gems from American Archives
Exploratorium, Pier 15, Kanbar Forum
7pm; $15
Host Description: "Take a surprising journey through often overlooked corners of American cinema in this celebration of the colossal work of the San Francisco–based National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF). For this two-part screening, NFPF Executive Director Jeff Lambert introduces eight diverse works from archives across the nation. From a document of a hollerin’ contest held at the self-proclaimed "crossroads of the world" (Spivey's Corner, North Carolina) to a must-see of experimental cinema featuring Anaïs Nin and an innovative electronic score, each film is a wholly unique and memorable glimpse into the great and underseen works of film archives."
Slim's, 333 11th St.
8pm; $31
Host Description: "Hum’s sonic universe is a solipsistic world that exists on its own terms, a maelstrom of sensations and colors, a thick metallic vortex of fuzztoned guitars with a silent core at the center like the eye of a hurricane – equal parts homegrown and high-tech. Hum serves up a cacophony of overlapping harmonics and dense shards of electric guitars providing a counterpoint to Talbott’s tales of innocence corrupted and love lost, the past mourned, the theories of physics and relativity applied to modern-day relationships and contemporary attitudes."
SF Indie Fest Screens Airplane!
McCoppin Hub
8pm
Host Description: "1980’s spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting—a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who’s developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty)."
Friday, September 18th
SoMa StrEAT Food Park, 428 11th St.
11am-5pm
Host Description: "Take a bite out of the tastiest fish on wheels as we celebrate San Francisco’s unique food truck culture with our hosts, SoMa StrEat Food Park. Enjoy live music and drink specials from the bar while local food trucks serve up sustainable seafood all day long. This family-friendly event will provide opportunities to meet your local fishermen, learn about where your seafood comes from, and understand how you can make wise seafood choices. Jimmy Leslie will bring his Guitar Fish Adventures to life for a musical sustainable seafood adventure for the whole family."
Sixth Street (Market to Howard)

This is the first system to be installed in the U.S. and we're very excited about debuting it on September 18th when we open to the public."
1015 Folsom
10pm; $24.60
Host Description: "No stranger to stardom, Ginuwine first emerged on the music scene in 1996 with the multi-platinum disc The Bachelor. Described by one critic as “silky, seductive vocals purred beside Timbaland's jagged, hyperkinetic beats to create a uniquely edgy R&B sound," The Bachelor became an instant classic. “Pony,” the daring first single, peaked at number-one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks for two weeks in late 1996, and reached number six on Billboard's Hot 100.
