If you’re a commuter on New York City’s infamous subway system, you may have seen a red train roll through the station from time to time. They sort of resemble trolleys and I find them to be much more endearing than the silver trains we use today:
The other day, I passed by a train yard full of the "trolleys," which got me thinking: Why red?
Well, according to Wikipedia, subway cars were painted that specific color in order to combat graffiti, which was a major problem during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, these outdated trains are referred to as “Redbirds.”
Oh...and that specific shade of red? It’s called Gunn Red or “Broad Street Red.”
