As their proposed 13-story, 186-unit apartment complex for 1028 Market St. (between Sixth and Seventh) continues to work its way through the planning process, War Horse and Tidewater Capital have launched a competition to help select the public art piece that will accompany the future development.

Because of the project's location within the Planning Department's Downtown Area Plan, its developers are required to put one percent of their construction costs toward the creation of publicly accessible artwork on the redeveloped site.

1028 Market St., which formerly housed LA Gals and Hollywood Billiards, is currently home to The Hall.

Out of a pool of 133 interested artists, the developer's advisory committee for the project has selected eight finalists. Those teams then toured the site and the Tenderloin with the neighborhood's venerable guide, Del Seymour, and developed proposals for public art that would contribute to and reflect the evolving neighborhood.

From now through Aug. 20th, the public is invited to stop by The Hall (11am-8pm weekdays) or the project website to view and comment on all eight proposals.

Some of the ideas that made the cut: a sculpture made of LCD panels that displays images and animations curated by the local community; lobby decorations featuring a series of illustrations and murals about stories neighborhood residents share; and a towering exterior sculpture that reflects the neighborhood's evolution by changing colors as light hits it from different angles.

One finalist team proposes connecting rainbow-centric artwork on-site with an audio tour, compiled with the help of neighborhood residents.

Assuming the new development secures approval, the piece the advisory committee choses later this summer will become a permanent public-art fixture in the neighborhood. So get your feedback in before it's too late.
