Best Places in Boston to Catch the Sunset

Whether you’re looking for a secluded place to watch the sun set among the trees or a sweeping panorama of the whole city, Boston’s got plenty of options to catch a stunning sunset. Unfortunately some of the most gorgeous views come with a price tag, but if you’re willing to do a little exploring you can find some beautiful options for no cost at all.

1. Top Of the Hub

Perched atop the city’s second tallest building, the Prudential, Top of the Hub provides a classy dining experience paired with the best view the city offers. Make sure you go early, though. Everyone knows it’s the best place to catch the sunset, so there’s likely to be a wait. Luckily, it has a reputation for making outstanding drinks so you’ll have something to do to pass the time at least. Visit: 800 Boylston St., Boston.

2. Prospect Hill Monument

Tucked away in the hills of Somerville, this miniature castle provides a stunning view of Cambridge and Somerville. Unfortunately, the whole thing is only accessible a couple of times a year, but you’re allowed to go up halfway year round. It was built during the Revolutionary War, and legend has it that George Washington himself first raised a flag there (though it’s not entirely verified what flag it was that went up). Visit: Munroe Street at Bigelow Street, Somerville.

3. Wright’s Tower

Located in the Middlesex Fells reservation in Medford, Wright’s Tower is perched on a treelined ridge and provides a sweeping view of Boston and the surrounding areas. Go up there during the fall for a colorful view of the New England foliage and watch the sun set over the trees. Visit: South Border Road, Medford.

4. Blue Hills

A bit south of Boston, the Blue Hills provide a hiking experience that’s a great option for families as the trails aren’t too long or challenging for children and adults. Though the views of the city aren’t as majestic as some of the other options, watching the sun set over the hills to the west is a beautiful experience you won’t soon forget. Visit:  695 Hillside St., Milton.

5. Castle Island

Since Boston is located right on the water, it can be tough to find a spot where you get to actually see the sun set over the skyline. Luckily, Castle Island (now inaccurately named since it was connected to the mainland by a strip of land in 1928) is tucked right in Boston Harbor, giving you the perfect angle to see the sun fall right over the city. It’s also home to Fort Independence, one of the oldest forts in America and a critical strategic point during the American Revolution. For those looking for a taste of history capped off by a gorgeous sunset, Castle Island is a no brainer. Visit: 2010 William Day Rd., South Boston.
