This Thursday: Test Drive A New, Locally Developed Smartphone In Hayes ValleyPhotos: Nextbit/Facebook

Sick of being smartphone-twinsies with your mom?

A local startup, Nextbit, is taking on behemoths like Apple, Google, LG and Motorola to bring smartphone aficionados something sleek and new that stands out from the crowd. The company has launched a new pop-up at Hayes Valley shop Azalea, allowing potential buyers to test-drive the device before dropping more than $300 to take it home.

The phone, named Robin, operates on the Android system. But it brings something entirely new to the table: the ability to automatically store apps, photos and any other data you're not using regularly, to ensure your phone never runs out of space.

While tech news sites like CNET and TechRadar aren't 100 percent satisfied with Nextbit's cloud execution so far, they've been intrigued by the prospects this newcomer brings to the table—and praised its distinct, minimalist design.

So if upgrading to a cutting-edge piece of plastic and metal that will likely turn heads and start conversations is appealing, stop by Nextbit's new pop-up shop within Azalea during normal business hours, 11am-7pm daily.

Or, better yet, drop by on Thursday night to enjoy a live DJ and free drinks and bites while you peruse the device's bells and whistles (and accessorize with Azalea's stock of designer duds).
