A grim scene unfolded at the El Cerrito del Norte BART station Wednesday evening when a person was fatally struck by a train, prompting the station's temporary shutdown, per officials' statements Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. local time, was initially described by BART as a "major medical emergency," according to Mercury News. The identity of the individual has not been released, as authorities await the opportunity to notify next of kin.
The disruption affected commuters as the station remained closed for about an hour, until just before 7 p.m. AC Transit stepped in to aid stranded passengers, with Line 72M adjusting its route to include stops at the Richmond, El Cerrito del Norte, and El Cerrito Plaza stations. The swift response, and measures taken to mitigate the chaos were detailed in a BART official's statement obtained by Mercury News.
As normalcy began to return to the impacted station, BART resumed its service by 7 p.m., reported Bay City News Service. Commuters who navigated detours and delays finally saw trains running back on their habitual lines.
BART officials also confirmed a major delay on the Richmond Line in the Berryessa, Richmond and Millbrae directions, which further complicated the evening for travelers. A needed reminder, that in the rhythm of the daily commute lies the potential for unpredictability and tragedy.
