Here Are America's 50 Favorite Donut Shops: How Does Chicago Stack Up?

With abundant donut options across America's cities and towns, it's not hard to find a satisfying treat near you. But when was the last time you had a truly mind-blowing donut?

Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top 50 donut shops around the country, using Yelp data collected in early May and our own special sauce to produce a data-driven breakdown of where donuts reign supreme in the US—and how Chicago stacks up.

As it turns out, Chicago is definitely pulling its weight, with three of the country's best donut emporiums. The highest-ranking spot, at #22, is Country Donuts, a Crystal Lake staple since 1976, that has a perfect 5- star average with 236 reviews.

What makes Country Donuts special? Its long-running operation, traditional and specialty donut styles all probably contribute to its popularity. But based on our analysis, there appears to be another factor: its 24-7 operation. Only 5 percent of the 17,000 donut shops on Yelp in the US are open all the time, but 28 percent of the top 50 are, including five of the top ten donut places nationally.

Next on the list at #25 is Do-Rite Donuts & Coffee, with a 4.5- star average and 834 reviews. Its selection of old fashioned classics and creative flavors, like its popular candied maple bacon donut, make it a tempting destination for locals and tourists alike.

So much so, that a second location, Do-Rite Donuts & Chicken, also made our national list, at #38, making Do-Rite one of only two donut establishments that show up on our list twice. This time, it seems like the favorable pairing of sweet donuts and spicy chicken propelled it to the upper tier of our analysis.
