When it comes to top-notch pizza, Philadelphia serves it up in all kinds of shapes, sizes and styles, but how does Philly compare to the truly standout pizza establishments across the country?
To find out, we turned to Yelp, combining the company’s user ratings with our own secret (pizza) sauce to find the 50 most popular pizzerias in America.
Philadelphia may not have as many top pizza places as Chicago, New York City or Los Angeles, but Philly’s pizza scene is anything but lacking.
Landing at #11 on our list is Barbuzzo, on S 13th Street. What makes it so special?
A solid lunch or late-night option, Barbuzzo only offers a handful of pizzas on its menu, including the beloved “Zucchine” (shaved zucchini, cherry tomatoes, red onion, garlic, caciocavallo, pistachio pesto and squash blossoms) and “Asapargo” (shaved asparagus, 1732 guanciale, secret white sauce, parmesan, fior di latte and a truffled farm egg).
As Yelper Wendy L. put it: “ … the asparago pizza was the main reason why I wanted to visit Philly. Thin crust, charred well, the runny egg 100% made this dish. I love runny eggs that are executed well, especially on a pizza. This definitely can compete with NY pizza.”
Another Yelper wrote: “My maiale pizza was pretty tasty. I loved the prosciutto on it as it provided some saltiness to the pizza. The arugula was a nice touch as well. With the seasonings and cheese, this pizza was divine.”
