If you've got New American on the mind, a recent opening is need-to-know. The newcomer to Washington Avenue Coalition / Memorial Park, called The Union Kitchen, is located at 6011 Washington Ave.

This new spot—which has four other Texas locations—specializes in "global cuisine with Southern hospitality."

The menu is extensive, so expect to see a variety of options on offer, like small plates and pub fare, brick oven fired pizzas, soups and salads, steaks and chops, seafood, and more.

For starters, look for items like the "Lolo Hawaiian Tostada," with ahi tuna served over wonton crisps, Asian slaw, and pineapple chutney; and a crab "Napoleon" with Texas blue lump crab, avocado, citrus vinaigrette, and Caribbean fruit salsa.

On the pizza menu, there are pies like "Darrian's Deluxe," with ground beef, pecan-smoked bacon, pepperoni, mild Italian, sausage, and bell peppers; and a braised short rib pizza with red onions, baby arugula, smoked gouda, and BBQ aioli.

Rounding things out are entrées like cider-braised pork loin with sweet potato puree and spaghetti squash, and meatloaf served over Texas toast, mashed potatoes, caramelized onions, and gravy. (You can check out the full menu here.)

The newcomer has garnered rave reviews thus far, with a five-star rating out of 11 reviews on Yelp.

Victor V., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on December 9th, said: "Excellent. Good-quality food. Had the artichoke dip and red snapper. Well-trained staff. Compliments to the manager. Valet parking available."

Yelper Christine L. added: “Place is huge. The spinach tortellini sample they gave us was tasty. My pepperoni pizza was good.”

And Greggo F. said: "Order off the social hour/happy hour menu, which is from 2-6:30pm and untll 7 if you're a loyalty member. Great half-price small plates."
