A new European cafe serving modern Nordic dishes has opened up shop in the neighborhood. Located at 1636 R St. NW in Dupont Circle, the newcomer is called Mikko.

When Chef Mikko was 13 years old, he began cooking in his family's restaurant called Cassi, in Stockholm. He later went on to prepare food for ambassadors, diplomats and royalty around the world, including a 15-year stint as the Finnish Ambassador's chef in Washington D.C. For the past five years, Chef Mikko ran his own high-end catering firm.

Mikko's menu revolves around rye, seafood, mushrooms, berries and roots that are cooked, cured, smoked, pickled and prepared in true Nordic fashion. Expect both weekly and daily specials, like the grilled shrimp sandwich, house-smoked salmon, and Finnish-style fish soup. Mikko also serves an array of Danish-style open-face sandwiches. The new eatery also does catering.

With a four-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp so far, Mikko has gotten a good response.

David G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on May 10, said, "This place is a delightful addition to the Dupont Circle neighborhood. I had a salami sandwich and it was uniquely healthy and delicious."

And Andrea T. said, "Well with having a Finnish husband, once hearing that Mikko was in D.C., we came here immediately to see what it has to offer. We were very pleased."

Head on over to check it out: Mikko is open from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.–6 p.m. on Sunday.
