A new plant-based Middle Eastern spot has opened its doors in the neighborhood. Located at 395 Morse St. NE in Union Market, the new arrival is called Shouk and is the second location for the vegetarian eatery — its sister shop can be found in Mount Vernon Square.

Founder Ran Nussbächer said he wanted a veggie burger with “whole foods that you can actually see,” the Washington Post reports, one without processed or synthetic ingredients. His vegetarian patty consists of lentils, chickpeas, black beans, mushrooms and more, with three different serving options to choose from — burger-style in a Shouk pita, a rice/lentil bowl or on a fresh bed of greens.

A variety of snacks and sweet bites are also available. Come try the polenta fries with tomato sauce, hummus or a choco-cardamom cookie. (You can check out the menu here.)

The new arrival has gotten an enthusiastic response thus far, with a solid five-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp.

Carin C., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on May 19, wrote, "We love this place. The Shouk Burger is the real deal. So good. We were here last Saturday and couldn't stop thinking about it all week. So we're back!"

"A meal at Shouk is soul-satisfyingly good!" added Yelper Meredith I. "On this particular trip to the Union Market location of Shouk, we got the Shouk burger and the cauliflower pita. The burger was rich and crisp, the pita was gooey in the right way. We also nibbled on the polenta fries, cashew labneh and the not-to-be-missed cardamom chocolate chip cookies. I have vivid dreams about these cookies!"

And Chris G. said, "Second time here in consecutive weekends. Bangin'! My girl and I love this place, especially me being a new vegan, I can eat a truly satisfying vegan burger."

Head on over to check it out: Shouk is open from 11 a.m.–10 p.m. daily.
