Wendell's

Wendell's is a contemporary diner serving up breakfast, lunch and brunch staples in Berkeley.

This new eatery features classic fare with modern touches, courtesy of Chef Eric Lee. For those with a sweet tooth there's the Black & White French Toast with chocolate and orange ginger brioche, or the Brandy Vanilla Waffle with citrus zest. On the savory side there are a variety of egg scrambles, classic English breakfast, chicken fried steak and more. The full menu can be found here.

Wendell's currently holds four stars out of 18 reviews on Yelp, indicating good reviews.

Yelper Sothary C., who reviewed Wendell's on May 28, wrote, "The pancakes are huge and worth every penny, especially with the fresh butter and berry compote. The shoestring fries were also a great addition to my meal -- great casual dining!"

Yelper Tracie B. wrote, "Solid 4.5 which I'm upping to 5. Excellent service and absolutely loved the Wendell's Breakfast Poutine — perfectly cooked eggs over mushroom/sausage gravy on top of a large pile of crispy shoestring potatoes."

Wendell's is open from 7 a.m.–2 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m.–3 p.m. on weekends.

Courier Market Bar Kitchen

Courier Market Bar Kitchen is a cocktail bar and New American spot located in the historic area where the city's early newspapers took shape.

Chef David Lillich has drawn inspiration from cuisine around the world, using local and seasonal products to add a modern twist to their dishes, according a press release.

The menu includes everything from ricotta pancakes and umami bowls to chicken tikka and paella made with ancient grains. There is also a daily breakfast buffet that begins at 6 a.m. Check out the menus here. 

The first Yelp users are excited about Courier Market Bar Kitchen, which currently holds five stars out of two reviews on the site.

Yelper Kevin N., who reviewed it on May 12, wrote, "They have a proper restaurant if you want to sit down and relax, or a market bar if you just need to grab something to go. Both have great food options. The restaurant does a great job innovating classic dishes. "

Kelly O. noted, "Guys, this place is such an amazing hidden gem. Every single dish we had here was outstanding and so original. The scallop ceviche and the risotto were incredible."

Courier Market Bar Kitchen is open from 6 a.m.–11 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday and 6 a.m.–midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Smiling Moose Sandwich Grill & Bar

Smiling Moose Sandwich Grill & Bar is a bar and traditional American spot, offering sandwiches and more.

The menu includes hot sandwiches and wraps, a variety of salads and breakfast all day. The University location is housed in a 3,500-square foot space with indoor and outdoor seating. 

Smiling Moose Sandwich Grill & Bar currently holds 2.5 stars out of 24 reviews on Yelp, but it's still early days.

Yelper Chris H., who reviewed Smiling Moose Sandwich Grill & Bar on February 7, wrote, "The food was good, but they were out of French fries so they substituted sweet potato fries instead, but that's an upgrade in my book!"

Katie E. noted, "It's Sunday morning and there were are only 5 tables occupied out of roughly 25 or 30. We waited for over an hour for two simple skillets. Their kitchen gets backed up with one large (8 person) table."
