A new herbal steam bar specializing in a controversial beauty practice has opened up shop in the rapidly changing K Street area. Located at 1007 12th St., Suite B,  in Downtown (inside Double Take Hair Gallery), the new addition is called The Honey Throne.

The Honey Throne focuses on herbal lower body steams, which it claims on its website will "release uterus toxins, as well as strengthen and tone the reproductive organs."

Also called a V steam, this American interpretation of the traditional Korean practice chai-yok gained prominence after actress Gwyneth Paltrow endorsed one Los Angeles-area spa's version in her lifestyle magazine Goop and subsequently faced heated criticism from skeptical gynecologists.

The negative publicity has not deterred a host of imitators — now including one in Sacramento. The Honey Throne also offers herbal foot baths and sells herb-infused organic bath salts and smudge sticks.

The steam bar has received a positive response in its early days, with a five-star rating out of two reviews on Yelp.

Anitra B., who was the first Yelper to review the new spot on June 20, wrote, "This is my first experience with V steaming and I love it! Definitely a must and a new part of my beauty regime."
