A new Puerto Rican joint has opened for business in the neighborhood. The new addition to Little Havana, called Mofongo, is located at 1644 S.W. Eighth St.
The eatery specializes in upscale versions of the eponymous mofongo: green plantains mashed with salt, garlic and olive oil in a wooden pestle. On the menu, look for the mofongo relleno camarones, a mofongo that comes stuffed with shrimp.
Also on the menu are appetizers like the tropical ceviche with mango vinaigrette, and cocktails like piña colada and sangria. Diners can finish the meal with a dessert like tres leches cake or guava-topped cheesecake. Mofongo also provides catering and hosts events.
With a 3.5-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp, the new restaurant is still finding its feet, but it's early days.
Peggy A., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on June 3, praised the attentive service and added, "The table's favorite was the Chuleta Can Can. It was absolute perfection! The churrasco mofongo was very good too."
But Yelper Monica L. was more critical: "Confused, very confused. You walk in and the whole concept is off. Are you fine dining or are you fast-casual? ... They bring beers, yet no cups. Silverware comes wrapped up with one knife and no fork."
Intrigued? Stop in to try it for yourself. Mofongo is open from 11 a.m.–10 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday and 11 a.m.–midnight on Friday-Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)
