Two pedestrians were seriously injured early yesterday morning when they were struck by a driver in a BMW while crossing the street in Hayes Valley.

The incident took place around 3:24 a.m. near the intersection of Octavia and Haight streets when two men, one 34, the other 38, were crossing the street. According to police, an unknown driver who was heading southbound on Octavia Street struck both men, inflicting life-threatening injuries.

After the collision, the driver remained at the scene and was not arrested; both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment.

According to the Department of Health, the intersection where the collision occurred is on the city's high-injury network—the 12 percent of city streets where more than 70 percent of the most severe and fatal injuries occur.
