Topping the list is Nailah's Kitchen, a primarily Senegalese restaurant that is located at 5722 York Road near Belvedere Square. This is the highest-rated African restaurant in Baltimore, boasting 4.5 stars out of 188 reviews on Yelp.

Popular menu items include the dibi chicken (diced and grilled), grilled lamb and the sorrel-and-pineapple drink known as bissap. The music and atmosphere are designed to take you to Senegal.

2. Ebenezer Ethiopian Restaurant

Next up is Ebenezer Ethiopian Restaurant, situated at 647 W. Pratt St. in Ridgely's Delight. Located in Pigtown for a decade, the business relocated to a new, larger location earlier this year, reports SouthBMore.com.

The restaurant serves Ethiopian classics like tibs (a stir-fry/stew hybrid), kitfo (marinated and minced raw beef) and wot (a curried stew), all eaten with injera flatbread. Vegetarians will find a number of options that apply the same spicy, full-flavored approach. With 4.5 stars out of 125 reviews on Yelp, Ebenezer Ethiopian Restaurant has proven to be a local favorite.

3. Nando's Peri-Peri

Downtown's Nando's Peri-Peri, located at 421 W. Baltimore St., is part of the South Africa-based chain that has more than two dozen peri-peri shops scattered around the DMV and Illinois.

Its adherents praise the peri-peri chicken (named for the chili pepper used to flavor it), as well as side dishes like Portuguese rice (spicy yellow rice with fresh peppers and herbs) and grilled corn on the cob. Yelpers give this branch four stars out of 288 reviews.

4. Tabor Ethiopian Restaurant

Finally, there's Tabor Ethiopian Restaurant at 328 Park Ave. downtown. As with Ebenezer, you'll find piles of injera to scoop up kitfo, tibs and wot, and a vegetarian-friendly menu.

There's also live jazz on Thursday nights and Ehtopian beer and wine. With four stars out of 102 Yelp reviews, it's a popular option for African cuisine. Head over to try it for yourself.
