
In search of a new favorite Mexican spot?
Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top Mexican restaurants around Detroit, using both Yelp data and our own secret sauce to produce a ranked list of the best places to meet your needs.
1. Taqueria El Rey

Topping the list is Taqueria El Rey. Located at 4730 W. Vernor Highway in the heart of Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit, the eatery is the highest-rated Mexican restaurant in the city, boasting 4.5 stars out of 290 reviews on Yelp.
According to its website, this establishment is home to the best grilled chicken in metro Detroit, with offerings by the half or the whole chicken and served with sides of rice, beans, tortillas and salsa.

2. Honey Bee La Colmena

Next up is Hubbard-Richard's Honey Bee La Colmena, situated at 2443 Bagley St. With 4.5 stars out of 198 reviews on Yelp, the grocery store and Mexican eatery has proven to be a local favorite.
Having served the Detroit community for over six decades, the newly expanded store offers a wide range of supermarket staples, including delicatessen goods, fruits, vegetables, seafood and an extensive selection of Central American ingredients.
Hungry? Come in for one of the spot's daily lunch specials featuring Mexican specialties like carnitas, chicken enchiladas, beef burritos, charro beans and more.
3. Taqueria Mi Pueblo

Taqueria Mi Pueblo, located at 7278 Dix St., is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the Mexican restaurant four stars out of 398 reviews.
On the menu, look for a "variety of flavorful, authentic Mexican dishes and salsas that make for a full stomach and a happy heart," says the restaurant on its website, from homemade tortillas and tortas to grilled tacos and cheesy quesadillas.

4. El Barzon

El Barzon, an Italian and Mexican fusion spot, is another go-to, with four stars out of 373 Yelp reviews. Head over to 3710 Junction St. to see for yourself.
The business comes courtesy of owner and chef Norberto Garita, explains the eatery on its website, who practiced fine Italian cooking in New York before relocating to the Detroit area.
Menu offerings include fusion specialties like spicy pork tacos, poblano peppers with housemade tomato sauce, and Popian — chicken breast with green mole sauce made of pumpkin seeds, jalapeño peppers and tomatillo. (You can view the full menu here.)
5. El Asador

Last but not least, check out Mexicantown's El Asador, which has earned four stars out of 278 reviews on Yelp. You can find the upscale Mexican restaurant, which offers seafood, steak and more, at 1312 Springwells St.
Helmed by chef Luis Garza, expect to find signature offerings like Veracruz mahi mahi with onions, tomatoes, green olives, serrano peppers, capers and fresh herbs; and Camarones en Salsa de Langosta — a dish consisting of cheese-stuffed breaded shrimp with lobster cream sauce and poblano peppers.
