Hungry for Italian fare? Good news: Sfoglina has opened a new location downtown at 1099 New York Ave. NW, serving Italian classics and regional specialties.
It replaces Casa Luca, which was also owned and operated by Fabio and Maria Trabocchi. Sfoglina is a sibling to the pasta house of the same name in Van Ness. The couple's growing restaurant empire also includes Fiola, Fiola Mare and the Wharf's Del Mar.
The menu features handmade pastas like Roman tonnarelli noodles with pecorino and Neopolitan maccheroni (macaroni) with pesto and artichokes. Other dishes include a prosciutto plate with melon and balsamic and grilled swordfish with lemon capers. Wines are helpfully divided on the menu by texture, structure and taste.
With a 4.5-star rating out of eight reviews on Yelp so far, the fresh addition has been warmly received by patrons.
Yelper Gretchen R. wrote, “The service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. Everything was incredible. The Caesar salad was the most delicious I have ever had. The atmosphere was low-key, with music that added to the ambiance but didn't overpower it.”
And Eric F. wrote, "What sets this place apart is that the service was very good. One of the dishes came out five or 10 minutes later than the rest of the mains, and our waitress and the manager bent over backwards to make sure the rest of our meal was an enjoyable experience."
Head on over to check it out: Sfoglina is open from 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. on Friday and 5–10:30 p.m. on Saturday. (It's closed on Sunday.)
