The dinner menu lists entrees like fried shrimp tacos, a house-made meatloaf in black pepper gravy and chicken pot pie. Cocktails and beer round out the offerings.

2. Gunther & Co

Next up is globally-influenced modern American spot Gunther & Co, situated at 3650 Toone St. The industrial-chic restaurant of exposed brick appeared in a season four episode of "House of Cards." Its wide-ranging menu has hints of Thai cuisine (a seafood hot pot in phanang curry broth), Italio-Spanish (burrata with anchovies), and Franco-Peruvian (steak frites in chimichurri).

In nice weather, enjoy the large back patio. With four stars out of 218 reviews on Yelp, it's proven to be a local favorite.

3. Samos Greek Island Grill

Greek spot Samos Greek Island Grill is another top choice. The entirely vegetarian spread and side dish menus include hummus, spicy feta and roasted vegetables. Pita wraps are stuffed with grilled meat or feta plus tomatoes, onions and tzatziki sauce. There is also grilled meat souvlaki, and small plates of spanakopita and fried calamari.

Next, Mission BBQ is another neighborhood go-to, with four stars out of 192 Yelp reviews. The patriotic chain celebrates veterans and local first responders with fundraising and promotions like the "American Heroes" soda cup, with a portion of sales going to charities.

5. Atwater's Canton Crossing

Finally, check out Atwater's Canton Crossing, which has earned four stars out of 155 reviews on Yelp. With five area locations, Atwater's serves traditional, hearty American breakfasts, lunches and dinners. (There's also a weekend brunch.) Think buttermilk pancakes, potato salad, and grilled ham and cheese biscuits. Bread is made in-house and ranges from sourdough to raisin pumpernickel.
