If you love live music, but rock bands like those showcased at the seventh annual Aftershock festival on Saturday and Sunday aren't your thing, there are still shows to catch this weekend in Sacramento.

From a country songwriter making a name for himself to a hometown jazz vocalist, here are the local shows worth checking out this weekend.

Taylor Phillips

North Carolina-born country songwriter and musician Taylor Phillips will play a free show this Friday evening at Downtown's Goldfield Trading Post. Best known for penning Luke Combs's award-winning single "Hurricane," he released his debut EP, "Six Strings Attached," in May.

Gumbo & Jambalaya Music Festival

If you're looking for great food to accompany your music, you may be interested in the outdoor Gumbo & Jambalaya Music Festival, at Miller Regional Park on Sunday. 

In addition to food, the festival will offer vendors and live music, as well as a small pageant.

Shirley, Lena & Me Featuring Virginia Ayers Dawson

Sacramento-based jazz singer-songwriter Virginia Ayers Dawson is presenting a musical celebration of legendary vocalists Shirley Horn and Lena Horne.

Ayers Dawson will perform some of their most distinctive pieces, as well as some of her own compositions, on Sunday evening at CLARA as part of their Three Nights of Jazz program (they will also have performances on Friday and Saturday).

When: Sunday, October 14, 7-9 p.m.
