An arson suspect who fled Elk Grove police officers on foot through rural properties near Bradshaw and Waterman roads died by suicide Saturday, after an officer fired a service weapon during the chase but investigators have not yet determined whether that gunfire struck him. The suspect had been spotted setting fires at a residence in the 8600 block of Bradshaw Road before the pursuit began.
Officers were first dispatched to reports of a suspicious person setting fires at the Bradshaw Road residence, according to EGPD, the official X account for the Elk Grove Police Department. Responding officers located the suspect near Bradshaw and Waterman roads, and he then ran from them across several rural properties in the area, per the same account. As ABC10 reports, the chase culminated in an officer firing a shot before the suspect died by suicide.
The suspect was seen carrying a firearm during the pursuit, which is why an officer discharged their weapon, according to the department's own account. But as of Sunday, police confirmed that investigators still had not verified whether the officer's bullet struck the suspect before his self-inflicted death, per ABC10's reporting. That distinction remains a central open question in the case, with police describing the incident as contained and posing no threat to the community as of Sunday.
