As the latest U.S. jobs report hits newsstands, how did cities in the Pittsburgh area do in terms of new jobs added last month? And which industries and occupations are attracting workers to the area most?

Pittsburgh has risen to first place among U.S. cities in hiring for technology engineers, according to new positions posted last month on jobs site Glassdoor. The city also ranked first in new job openings for store team membersĀ and catering coordinators.

Comparing across the country, Pittsburgh came in ahead of New York City, the U.S. city with the second-most new positions for technology engineers last month. That is especially notable, since New York City has a much larger population, at 8,461,961, compared to the 'Burgh's 305,305, according to 2016 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Communities Survey.

If we focus on the number of jobs relative to the local population, Pittsburgh is most competitive in hiring for middle office analysts, placing third among U.S. cities in per-capita openings for that role. The city ranked fourth in new jobs for supply specialists and decision support analysts, again relative to the local population.

Pittsburgh fell just behind Ithaca, New York in per-capita hiring for middle office analysts.

In terms of overall hiring by industry, Pittsburgh does best in banking and financial services, placing 10th among U.S. cities for total jobs added last month by local banks and finance companies. The city ranked 11th for new jobs added in the computer software industry, and 13th for health care jobs.

The top U.S. city for new positions in financial services and health care last month was New York City, while San Francisco topped the charts nationwide for new positions in computer software and hardware.

Looking for new opportunities in a field with strong local demand? Companies like PNC Financial Services Group are currently bringing on technology engineers, and other local employers like Sheetz are hiring store team members.
