A new fast-casual Japanese restaurant has debuted downtown at 1100 R St in the R Street Corridor, in the former space of Amaro. Helmed by Daniel Takata and Jennifer Joo of I Love Teriyaki, Takata-ya aims to be a "casual, relaxing environment" rather than a hip bar, as Takata told the Sacramento Bee.

However, the large, open two-story space does have wine, beer and cider on tap to go with its mostly Japanese menu. Diners will find homestyle dishes like chicken katsu curry and bento boxes with a choice of entrees plus gyoza, salad, coleslaw and rice. The spot also offers a few sushi roll and sashimi options.

With a 3.5-star rating out of 13 reviews on Yelp so far, Takata-ya is still finding its feet, but it's early days.

"The food is good, the service was also good, but the timing out of the kitchen needs adjusting, especially during rush hours," wrote Mike R., who reviewed the new spot on September 28. "My wife had the vegetarian curry over rice with some takuan. It was almost perfect, hot, very flavorful, but needed a few more veggies."

"They were very short staffed and it seemed like they were a little bit all over the place," Yelper Kae S. seconded, but agreed that the food was good.

Takata-ya is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 5-9 p.m. on Sunday, so swing on by to take a peek.
