Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. is a new casual Southern restaurant in Shaw. The former Bladensburg Road drive-through and Union Market occupant is now in the former Drift location on Seventh Street, with a new retro feel and bold wall graphics.

Biscuits are, of course, at the core of the breakfast and brunch menus. There are sandwiches like ham, egg and cheese, and fried chicken with bacon, honey and hot sauce, each served on a warm buttermilk biscuit. Open-faced options include sliced ham and an egg with red-eye gravy.

A brunch menu is offered all day on weekends, and there's a lunch menu, too.

Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. is off to a solid start with a current Yelp rating of four stars out of four reviews.

Yelper Emma K., who reviewed it on Oct. 13, wrote, "Delicious food and really friendly service. Excellent selection of home cooking and when we got our breakfast, the biscuits and fixings did not disappoint. But the real star of the show is the friendly service."

Yelper H and I L. wrote, "So glad they are open after closing old location. Everything is delicious: biscuits, jam, chicken on biscuits, sausage gravy on biscuits. Staff is as friendly as always. Kids love it."

Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. is open from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily.

Bluestone Lane

Bluestone Lane is also serving morning customers in the Dupont/Farragut North area.

The Australian-inspired coffeehouse, with outposts in New York, California and Pennsylvania, as well as the DMV, is known for its “wellness lattes,” with options like matcha, the turmeric-infused Golden Latte and a beet latte with almond milk and dehydrated beet powder. You'll also find Aussie coffee drinks like the flat white and long black.

When it comes to food, there are several toasts, from avocado to banana, as well as heathy bowls based on oatmeal, grains or greens.

With a four-star rating out of eight reviews on Yelp, Bluestone Lane has been getting positive attention.

Yelper Ali M., who reviewed it on Oct. 10, wrote, "This place is gorgeous, huge windows, and the decoration is beautiful and inviting. I ordered the beet latte and it did not disappoint, just a tad sweet for my taste but they assured me there's no added sugar."

Vishal S. noted, "The store is bright and welcoming with all the glass. The food and coffee options mirror their other locations, which is all good. I tried their cold brew and avocado toast and came away satisfied. The avocado toast here is on my top five list!"

Luwich Cafe

Finally, Luwich Cafe is a mostly Vietnamese lunch spot that also serves an American-style breakfast. The morning platter is two eggs, choice of meat (ham, bacon, sausage) and toast. Or, take the same ingredients and make it into a breakfast sandwich. There are also hash browns and coffee — including the Vietnamese version, made with condensed milk — plus bagels and pancakes.

Come back later in the day for banh mi sandwiches and noodle bowls. Both are available with choice of grilled beef or pork, lemongrass chicken or tofu, or barbecue pork belly.

Yelpers are fans of Luwich Cafe, which has five stars out of 11 reviews.

Lynn P., who reviewed the eatery on Sept. 21, wrote, "There aren't too many places you can get banh mi in D.C., and I'll have to say the banh mis from Luwich are the best I've had in the district. Customer service was amazing."

Yelper Lynn N. wrote, "What a delicious addition to the neighborhood. I was advised by longtime Hill residents I'd have to go to the suburbs for banh mi and other Vietnamese food, but I'm glad I discovered this newcomer to the area. Great food, friendly and attentive service."

Luwich Cafe is open from 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday. (It's closed on Sunday.)
