A new gastropub has debuted in the neighborhood. Called Heller & Wilde, the new arrival is located at 2519 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in West End.
Its three floors include wood details and art deco flourishes that echo the 1920s-inspired menu. Think oysters Rockefeller, mushroom cigars and a New York strip with choice of house steak sauce, hollandaise, mushroom gravy and persillade.
Try one of the many relish-style appetizers, like marinated artichoke with pickled mushroom, chopped shrimp and garlic oil, and smoked tomato and olive relish. Or keep it simple with a burger, peanut butter and jelly, or creamy pumpkin soup.
The drinks menu features specialty cocktails, wine and craft beer. Order from your table or visit the reservation-only speakeasy-style bar on the third floor, called Ms. Fogg.
With a five-star rating out of five reviews on Yelp so far, Heller & Wilde is on its way to developing a local fan base.
Jonathan H., who reviewed the new spot on Sept. 28, wrote, "The chef made us beer-battered cod fish sandwiches from scratch. The fish, topped with lettuce and tomato, was perfectly cooked. The poppyseed bun tasted freshly baked and soaked up the homemade tartar sauce well. I'd come back for that dish alone."
And Andrea R. wrote, "The cigar wrapped mushrooms are insanely flavorful. Delish wine. Can't wait to try more food. The place is warm, cozy, friendly and full of cool vintage finds."
Head on over to check it out: Heller & Wilde is open from 5 p.m.–2 a.m. on Tuesday-Thursday, 5 p.m.–3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon–2 a.m. on Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)
