Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top places to visit near Mission San Jose, using both Yelp data and our own secret sauce to produce a ranked list of neighborhood businesses. Read on for the results.

1. Mad Mack's Burger Co

Topping the list is Mad Mack's Burger Co, a spot to score burgers and hot dogs. Located at 2933 Roosevelt Ave., it's the highest-rated business in the neighborhood, boasting 4.5 stars out of 122 reviews on Yelp. 

On the menu, expect options like the Hickory Burger (barbecue sauce, cheddar, onion rings and bacon), the Chalupa Burger (bean and cheddar chalupa, pico de gallo, chili con carne and a bean burger) and the signature Mad Mack (double meat and cheese, bacon, onion rings and Mad Mack sauce between two grilled cheese sandwiches). It also offers hot dogs, fish baskets, chicken sandwiches and more.

Yelper Erick P. said, "Great burgers! From the curb appeal, I would probably keep driving — and I would miss out! Very fresh and tasty burgers!"

2. Nicha's Comida Mexicana

Next up is the family-owned Nicha's Comida Mexicana, situated at 3119 Roosevelt Ave. The local staple, which has been in business for more than 40 years, has earned four stars out of 148 reviews on Yelp.

On the menu, expect dishes such as Nicha's Enchilada Plate (two cheese enchiladas covered in house special sauce and chili con carne, served with rice and refried beans), the Carne Guisada (savory beef tips cooked and simmered in gravy and served with refried beans, rice and flour tortillas) and the Chicken Alambre (chunks of chicken breast sautéed with bacon, onions, tomatoes and poblano peppers in salsa ranchera and topped with Monterey Jack cheese). Sabine F., who reviewed it on July 23, wrote, "Excellent enchiladas with green sauce. The chips and salsa are very tasty. Waitress was very attentive and outgoing. This is a very authentic restaurant that offers many delicious dishes."

3. Hometown Burger

Hometown Burger, a spot to score fast-food burgers and hot dogs with a 1950s aesthetic, is another much-loved neighborhood go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 23 Yelp reviews. Head over to 3436 Roosevelt Ave. to see for yourself. 

The menu offers combo meals that include burgers, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches and hot dogs, which are served with fries and a drink. Sides include onion rings, fried pickles and sweet potato fries. It also serves milkshakes, root beer floats and ice cream sundaes. (Check out its menu here.)

Yelper Angie A. wrote, "Everything is fresh and made to order. The variety on the menu is just right, not overwhelming like some places. The milkshakes and banana splits are a perfect complement to the burgers and sandwiches they offer."

4. Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta

Finally, check out Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta, which has earned 4.5 stars out of 21 reviews on Yelp. You can find the Mexican spot at 3451 Roosevelt Ave.

The taqueria offers tacos, chile rellenos, flautas, tortas, quesadillas, barbacoa and other Mexican fare. It occasionally has live music and regularly hosts karaoke nights.

Yelp reviewer Francie V. said, "Wow, we weren't expecting this great place! The food was amazing! The al pastor is delicious and not many places know how to make it. It's definitely authentic Mexican food."
