1. Moroccan Bites

Topping the list is Moroccan Bites. Located at 5714 Evers Road, the Moroccan eatery is the highest-rated African restaurant in San Antonio, boasting four stars out of 303 reviews on Yelp.

On the menu, you'll see dishes like the merguez (Moroccan sausage made with a mix of lamb, beef and spices) served with rice and a side; braised lamb shank with prunes, served with bread or rice; and the kefta kebab sandwich on French bread with tomatoes, onions, green olives and lettuce. 

Yelper Jacqui M. wrote, "This place has been my favorite place for tagine. The staff is always so pleasant and attentive. The mint tea is presented on a beautiful tray with a tea pot to match and served in traditional decorative glasses. The decor is full of vibrant colors and native decor and wonderful pictures that sets the mood."

2. Rehoboth Eritrean-Ethiopian Cuisine

Next up is Rehoboth Eritrean-Ethiopian Cuisine, situated at 1721 Babcock Road in Oak Hills. With 4.5 stars out of 87 reviews on Yelp, the restaurant has proven to be a local favorite.

When you visit, expect to see dishes such as the Rehoboth Special (cubed lamb and beef marinated with spices with a side of spinach and injera), the timtmo alicha (a thick stew made of yellow split peas, simmered in turmeric, onion, garlic and ginger) and the chicken tibsi with green peppers, onions, tomatoes and hot spices. Yelp reviewer A B. said, "This place is delicious. I've eaten at many Ethiopian places around the country and this is one of the best! You can't go wrong by eating here. They recently opened a bar, which is also a plus."

3. Kobams African Restaurant

Kobams African Restaurant, located at 8753 Grissom Road, is another top choice, with Yelpers giving the Caribbean and African spot, which offers seafood and more, 4.5 stars out of 63 reviews.

On the menu, items include jollof rice (a West African staple of rice mixed and simmered in a spicy and savory fried tomato and pepper stew sauce with your choice of meat), the poisson braise (a Cameroonian dish of spicy fish infused with spices and fresh herbs) and the egusi soup (pureed melon seed simmered with spinach, scotch bonnet and palm oil, garnished with seasoned smoked fish). 

Oyemayowa S., who reviewed Kobams African Restaurant on Sept. 18, said, "This restaurant far exceeded my expectations. Nice ambiance, good people and, most especially, awesome food. Loved it."

4. Wheelie Gourmet

Wheelie Gourmet, a food truck and Moroccan spot, is another much-loved go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 45 Yelp reviews. Head over to 13800 Jones Maltsberger to see for yourself.

The food truck describes its fare as Moroccan fusion and serves flatbread pitas like the Chicka, Chicka Bang Bang! (slow-cooked chicken in Moroccan spices, saffron, olives and preserved lemons, topped with feta cheese), the Atlas 7 (Moroccan spiced beef with cilantro and feta cheese) and the zaalouk (eggplant and zucchini stewed with tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and spice mix).
