If you're looking for Washington's best sandwich, consider that National Sandwich Day is just around the corner. Every year, on Nov. 3, sandwich lovers take a day to celebrate what happens when you put delicious things between two slices of bread.
To help get you on the bandwagon, we've rounded up Washington's top sandwich joints, using both Yelp data and our own methodology.
And remember, there's no rule that says you can only eat one sandwich a day.
1. A Baked Joint

Topping the list is A Baked Joint. Located in the Lyric 440K apartment building at 440 K St. NW (between North Fourth and North Fifth streets) in Mount Vernon Square, it is the most popular sandwich spot in Washington, boasting 4.5 stars out of 1,375 reviews on Yelp.
Here you'll find sandwiches built on freshly baked bread that is made on-site, including country spelt, challah, quinoa-turmeric and various focaccia. Sandwich options include smoked salmon with scallion cream cheese, tomato and fried capers served on an open-faced baguette, and spicy tuna with pickled cucumbers, mixed greens and mayo on toasted multi-grain. In addition to sandwiches, there are pizzas and baked goods.
2. Bub and Pop's

Next up is Dupont Circle's Bub and Pop's, situated at 1815 M St. NW (between 18th and 19th streets). With 4.5 stars out of 719 reviews on Yelp, it has proven to be a local favorite.
It's a classic deli that is serving up the house Italian hoagie, stuffed with four kinds of meat and provolone cheese, plus house-made mayo and a hot pepper relish. Or, consider the Philly Special: it's roast pork with pesto, sharp provolone and broccoli rabe sautéed with hot peppers. There are also soups and salads, and you can even order a glass of wine.
3. Simply Banh Mi

Georgetown's Simply Banh Mi, located at 1624 Wisconsin Ave. NW (between North Q and North 33rd streets), is another top choice, with Yelpers giving it 4.5 stars out of 490 reviews.
You are invited to design your own Vietnamese sandwich, starting with one of nine different proteins (barbecue pork belly, chicken meatballs, lemongrass tofu, among others), plus a sauce and toppings like peppers, crispy eggplant or a fried egg.
The same ingredient options also apply to the build-your-own salad bowl, rice bowl and the vermicelli noodle bowl.
4. Stachowski's Market

Finally, Stachowski's Market, a gourmet deli and butcher shop in Georgetown, is another much-loved go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 404 Yelp reviews.
The huge sandwiches here are made with house-cured meats, like salami, soppressata and pastrami, or sausages like smoked kielbasa and Cajun andouille that are served on a challah roll.
And when National Sandwich Day is over, stop in for the nightly dinner special, which has included beef stroganoff, roasted salmon and Caesar salad with yellowfin tuna. Head over to 1425 28th St. NW (between North P and North O streets) to try it for yourself.
