The New Scourge: A Conversation on Opioid Abuse in Texas

Join The Texas Tribune, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, for a conversation on local impacts of the opioid crisis and the state's public policy solutions in the works to address them. The discussion will feature state representatives Garnet Coleman and J.D. Sheffield, and Stephanie Jones, assistant professor of anesthesiology and pain management at UT Southwestern Medical Center. 

The conversation is the second in a three-part series on where the state's direction in terms of healthcare.

Beginners Raja Yoga Meditation Course

This Thursday, the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center hosts a free Raja yoga meditation course for beginners at the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center. Raja yoga is an "ancient system of meditation and spiritual understanding" that helps practitioners "return to a state of inner peace, personal power and self-worth through re-kindling the soul's original qualities and virtues."

In class, yogis will explore how to understand and improve their thought patterns, meditate to detach themselves from negative influences, develop inner powers and more.

Area 11 Volleyball Competition & Athlete Christmas Party 2018

The Special Olympics is seeking volunteers to assist with the Area 11 Volleyball Competition & Athlete Christmas party this Saturday at Ace Volleyball. The organization is looking for scorekeepers, line judges and a runner for the morning (7:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and afternoon (noon-4 p.m.) shifts or all-day shifts.
