Rooster & Owl
Now open at 2436 14th St. NW in Columbia Heights is Rooster & Owl. Led by a husband-and-wife team, it offers a seasonal tasting menu of creative American fare — with or without drink pairings.
So far, it's been well-received: it's got a five-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp.
618 Cocktail and Whiskey Lounge
Wander over to 618 H St. NW, Floor 2 in Chinatown and you'll find 618 Cocktail and Whiskey Lounge.
The bar, which replaces Penny Whisky Bar atop the Chinatown Garden restaurant, offers specials on classic cocktails and beer-and-a-shot combos. Bartenders also pour house concoctions, like the "Jack'n Ale," combining Jack Daniels and Bold Rock cider. There's a brief food menu, as well, with fried snacks, chicken wings and a burger.
Fruitive
New to 1330 Connecticut Ave. NW in Dupont Circle is Fruitive, a plant-based food and juice spot.
It's the second D.C. location from the area mini-chain, serving a 100 percent vegetarian menu, from juice combos and smoothies to berry and oat bowls, avocado toast and wraps.
Flower Child
A Foggy Bottom newcomer, Flower Child, is a New American and vegetarian spot that's located in an 11-story mixed-use project at 2112 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.
It's the first D.C. outlet from the national fast-casual chain, which is expanding rapidly in the metro area, according to Eater. Most dishes start vegan or vegetarian — like Indian-spiced cauliflower, or forbidden rice with veggies, toasted sesame and red chili hoisin. Leave them as is, add some tofu or, if meat's your thing, add chicken, beef or salmon.
Cold Stone Creamery
Finally, Cold Stone Creamery recently opened its doors at 3501 Connecticut Ave. NW, Unit 12A, in Cleveland Park.
The 30-year-old chain displays some 20 of its fresh-made ice cream and sorbet flavors, plus just as many toppings, which you can use to create your desired treat. It also offers shakes and smoothies, frozen yogurt and made-to-order specialty cakes.
