First up is this screening of the 1974 film Claudine at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library. Afterward, Dr. Shantella Sherman will explore themes from the movie related to eugenics, civility, character, aptitude, morality and social fitness. It's the first in a series of free monthly discussions on history and the legacy of eugenics in American culture.

Talk Story! Helen Zia + The Last Boat Out of Shanghai

Finally, author and activist Helen Zia discusses her new book Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution. Based on lengthy interviews and archival research, it tells the stories of the "Shanghai diaspora" that fled the encroaching communist army in 1949.
