Us

Husband and wife Gabe and Adelaide Wilson take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends. But as night descends, their serenity turns to tension and chaos when some shocking visitors arrive uninvited.

With a Tomatometer Score of 94 percent and an Audience Score of 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Us" has become a favorite since its release on March 22.

"Ambition in the horror genre can be a good thing, but the overreach in this movie detracts from both the horror and the ambition. Having said that, (Jordan) Peele shows a marked advance in filmmaking skills here and, in her dual role, (Lupita) Nyong'o is ferociously good," according to Peter Rainer of the Christian Science Monitor, while Tribune News Service's Katie Walsh said, "It wouldn't be as truly terrifying as it is without the jaw-dropping performance from his leading lady, Nyong'o, and with this collaboration they have created another whipsmart modern horror classic."

It's screening at Gateway Film Center (1550 N. High St.) through Thursday, April 4. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Happy Death Day 2U

Collegian Tree Gelbman wakes up in horror to learn that she's stuck in a parallel universe. Her boyfriend Carter is now with someone else, and her friends and fellow students seem to be completely different versions of themselves. When Tree discovers that Carter's roommate has been altering time, she finds herself once again the target of a masked killer. When the psychopath starts to go after her inner circle, Tree soon realizes that she must die over and over again to save everyone.

With a Tomatometer Score of 68 percent and an Audience Score of 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Happy Death Day 2U" is well worth a watch.

"Along the lines of other recent inexpensive genre efforts that behave more like franchise blockbusters by building out their lore and doubling down on their nerdiness," noted David Sims of the Atlantic, while Salon's Matthew Rozsa said, "It is instead that rarity — a sequel that is both better than the original and manages to retroactively improve that movie."

You can catch it at AMC Dine-in Easton Town Center 30 (275 Easton Town Center) through Wednesday, April 4. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Last House on the Left

A disturbed gang of youths kidnap, torture and murder two teenage girls; unbeknownst to the gang, the parents of one of the girls live nearby.

With a Tomatometer Score of 61 percent and an Audience Score of 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this 1972 release has proven potential. The Chicago Reader's Dave Kehr said, "It isn't artistically adroit, but if success in this genre is counted by squirms, it's a success," and Time Out's Nigel Floyd noted, "(Wes) Craven's cold, flat style of filming emphasizes the fact that the violence dehumanizes not only the victims, but the aggressors."

You can catch it at Gateway Film Center (1550 N. High St.) on Sunday, March 21 through Tuesday, April 2. Click here for showtimes and tickets.
