The number of crime incidents in Metairie saw an overall increase last week, for the second week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 286 for the week of March 11, up from 263 the week before.

The offenses that increased the most were theft and shooting. Theft rose to 89 incidents last week, from 57 the week before. Shootings went from three to six. Reports of theft have continued to grow for the last two weeks.

While a somewhat smaller category, there was also a considerable percentage increase in vandalism, from 11 incidents per week to 13.

There was one reported robbery last week. That represents a steady state from the previous week.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last week, reports of assault went from 29 to 26, and burglary fell from six to five.

There were 146 reports of "other" crimes, a decrease of 10 from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 11 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 14 reported arrests the week before.

Regarding day and time factors, Tuesdays, Mondays and Sundays produced the most reported crimes last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Tuesdays, Mondays and Sundays, while incidents on Thursdays, Wednesdays and Fridays went down. Comparing times of day, late morning, late afternoon and evening saw the most crime last week.
