A new Italian spot has opened its doors in the neighborhood. Called Caffe San Luca, the newcomer is located at 690 University Ave. in Hillcrest.

The menu offers pastries such as bomboloni and Italian croissants, paninis, handmade pasta, Italian desserts like tiramisu and tenerina, and focaccia that is baked in house.

Caffe San Luca has garnered rave reviews thus far, with a five-star rating out of 21 reviews on Yelp.

Lena K., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on March 4, wrote, "What a gem! I tried their tigella with proscuitto. It was perfectly toasted with the most fresh prosciutto I have tried in a while. Family owned, super cozy and warm place in the middle of busy Hillcrest."

Yelper Melinda P. added, “Awesome sandwiches — all fresh ingredients and the items that matter are imported directly from Italy. ... Such a nice young Italian family running the place too. Try this place out!”

Swing on by to take a peek for yourself: Caffe San Luca is open from 6:30 a.m.–6 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday. (It's closed on Sunday.)
