The number of crime incidents in Richmond saw an overall increase last week, for the second week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 58 for the week of March 4, up from 47 the week before.
Vandalism and theft led the increase in crime incidents. Vandalism rose to six incidents last week, from zero the week before. Theft went from 12 to 15.
There were three reported robbery incidents last week. That represents a steady state from the previous week.
Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last week, reports of burglary went from three to one, and assault fell from four to three.
There were 30 reports of "other" crimes, an increase of five from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 14 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, up from 11 reported arrests the week before.
Considering the concentration of crime across the city, Richmond Heights/East Richmond, Iron Triangle and Shields-Reid had the most reported incidents last week. Richmond Heights/East Richmond was at the top of the list the previous week as well.
Crime in the Iron Triangle went up the most. Crime reports in Shields-Reid also rose, after declining the week before, and incidents in Richmond Heights/East Richmond are up considerably as well.
Regarding when most crimes are committed, Thursdays, Wednesdays and Mondays witnessed the most reported crimes last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Mondays, while incidents on Fridays went down. Comparing times of day, evening, midday and early afternoon saw the most crime last week.
