A 19-year-old man is in life-threatening condition after being shot beneath the 101 freeway in the lobby of the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation building on the 200 block of 13th Street yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 3:50 p.m., near the Highway 101 exit to Duboce Avenue. According to police, the suspect, a 20-year-old man, approached the victim from behind and shot him with a handgun. He then fled in an unspecified vehicle.

The victim was hospitalized, and remains in critical condition. No arrests have yet been made in the case, but police are still actively investigating.

The incident follows another serious shooting in the Fillmore on Saturday night, which left a 27-year-old man dead and five others wounded.

In response to the violence, District 5 Supervisor Vallie Brown and other civic leaders will host a community meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Fillmore Heritage Center (1330 Fillmore St.)

Update 10 p.m.: Police said on Tuesday evening that a suspect was identified and information regarding the suspect and his silver Ford Focus sedan was disseminated to law enforcement.

On Monday night, SFPD investigators received word that the suspect vehicle had registered on an automated license plate reader in Southern California. SFPD investigators then alerted the California Highway Patrol (CHP) offices in Southern California that the suspect was likely in their patrol areas.

At approximately 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, CHP officers in the Blythe area located the suspect vehicle abandoned on Interstate 10 near the Arizona border. A short time later, CHP officers located the suspect and were involved in an officer involved shooting (OIS). The suspect was taken into custody and no CHP officers were injured.

The circumstances of the OIS are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. San Francisco Police investigators will be coordinating with the Riverside County Sheriff and are expected to travel to Southern California to continue the investigation into Monday’s shooting on 13th Street.
