Interested in adopting a pet — or just taking a peek at some furry felines near you? There are dozens of endearing cats up for adoption at animal shelters in and around Portland.

Animal shelters work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of cats currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Meryl, Siamese mix

Meryl is a female Siamese mix being cared for at Animal Aid Inc.

Meryl needs special time to bond with you: She'll need a home free of other cats, dogs and children. She has mastered her house-training etiquette. Meryl is already spayed, and she has all her shots.

About Meryl:

I’m a loving and gentle Seal Point Siamese kitty. Everyone who meets me has said that I’m just the sweetest and prettiest cat! I adore being loved on. I like to rub my face on your hands and ask you to pet my head. I love to kill string toys and drag them around. I would rather not live with other cats, dogs or children. I'm looking for a calm, patient home. I’ve had some problems in my previous home with a bladder stone and stress from a baby that led me to have inappropriate urination. Currently, I’m on medication to help with that, healthy, and using my litter box just fine!

Carol, domestic longhair

Carol is a lovable female domestic longhair cat staying at Animal Aid Inc.

Carol would prefer a home without small children. She is already spayed and vaccinated. She is already house-trained.

About Carol:

I’m a healthy and incredibly friendly lady with a beautiful coat. I’ve had a lot of change in my life recently as my beloved person passed away. I love lap time once I get to know you and I have a great purr. I dislike loud noises and possibly other cats (they are still getting to know me here). I get spooked by little children. I am looking for a quiet home with someone to show me some T.L.C. and help show me I’m safe.

Mary, domestic shorthair mix

Mary is a female domestic shorthair mix in the care of Northwest Animal Companions.

Mary is a social butterfly, and she'll get along great with other cats. She already has all of her shots, and she's spayed. She's mastered her house-training etiquette.

Mary's current caretakers say:

Mary is very social with the three other cats in her foster home. She is about a year old, so she loves playing with the other cats and her toys when she isn't snoozing in a sunny spot. Her story is typical of a cat on the streets fending for itself: hungry, scared, looking for a warm place to sleep, then eventually pregnant at the age of five to six months. Mary was lucky, a caring man rescued her and found NWAC, a rescue group, that would take her. She has been spayed, tested, vaccinated and m-chipped. After her kittens were weened, they were adopted and will not have to experience what she did as a kitten. Mary has come a long way from when she arrived at her foster home. When she first arrived, she chose to live under the bed, she now sleeps on the sofa and spends most of her time in the living areas. However, her person will need to have patience with her and give her the time to continue flowering at her speed. It would be advantageous for Mary to have another young cat in the household to show her by example what she is experiencing is okay and is safe. Her foster mom knows Mary will make someone a wonderful cat if she is given the opportunity. She is a work in progress, but worth it.

Sheekie, domestic shorthair and Russian blue mix

Sheekie is a female domestic shorthair and Russian blue mix currently residing at Animal Aid Inc.

Sheekie is looking for a dog-free home. Sheekie would prefer a home without small children. She's mastered her house-training etiquette. Sheekie is already spayed, and she has all her shots.

Here's Sheekie:

I’m a demure and unassuming cat who likes things in the slow lane. I’m a petite older lady at just 6.5 lbs. It takes me a bit to know things are safe but once I’m comfortable with you I will touch you with my paw or push my head under your hand for petting. I’m a drooler when I’m happy. I am very talkative and the more you talk to me the more I will talk back. I love to be a couch potato and watch T.V. with you. If I really trust you I love belly rubs. I dislike loud noises and small children. I am looking for a quiet gentle home with lots of love and peace.

Dahlia, domestic

Dahlia is a winsome female domestic cat currently housed at Animal Aid Inc.

She's vaccinated and spayed. She is already house-trained.

Dahlia's current caretakers say:

I’m a gorgeous fluffy girl who takes great care of my pristine fur. My brother, Cedar, and I were abandoned cats down by the river. We are still learning to complete trust people but we each love petting and human affection in our own ways. I like belly rubs. I love giving you gentle headbutts as you pet me. I take great comfort in sitting next to my brother. I dislike loud noises. I am looking for a quiet home that will be patient with my brother and me, and help us blossom.
