The number of crime reports in Detroit saw an overall decline last month, after a previous rise, according to data from CrimeoMeter, which collects reports from police agencies and validated sources.

Incidents fell by 7.2%, from 7,589 in July to 7,039 in August. Despite last month's decrease, crime reports remain about even with the same month last year. Crime trends often contain recurring patterns, based on seasons and other local events, making it useful to look at the year-over-year comparison as well.

Assault and vandalism reports declined the most from the previous month. Assault fell from 2,523 reported incidents in July to 2,166 in August, but has risen by 168 incidents since August of last year. Vandalism incidents went from 804 to 687 for the month, or about a 14% decrease. Vandalism reports are also slightly down from a year ago.

While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a sizable percentage decrease last month in prostitution, from 93 incidents per month to 21 and in alcohol-related offenses, from eight to one. Both prostitution and alcohol-related offenses have decreased since the same month last year.

There were 570 burglary reports last month and 107 rape or sexual assault incidents. Burglary has gone down by about 8.5 percent since August of last year, and rape or sexual assault has decreased by about 17 percent.

Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last month, auto theft reports went from 566 to 653. Domestic offenses rose from 49 to 78, and weapons offenses went up from 130 to 154. All three have seen an overall upward trend since the same time last year.

Looking at crime patterns in different areas of the city, the largest decline last month occurred in Islandview, Franklin Park and Lafayette Park. Ravendale, Chaldean Town and Art Center also saw considerable percentage decreases in crime offenses for the month, although they continue to have lower overall crime levels. Over the past year, crime has gone up the most in Brightmoor, and declined the most in Virginia Park.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays had the most crime incidents last month. The largest decrease from the previous month occurred on Mondays, Wednesdays and Tuesdays, while incidents on Saturdays, Thursdays and Fridays went up. Comparing times of day, after midnight, late night and evening saw the most crime last month on average each day.
