Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending at this very moment?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to discover which local businesses have been getting outsized attention this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Sacramento businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Read on to see which spots have the momentum heading into back-to-school season.

Open since June, this breakfast, brunch and New American spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "American (New)" on Yelp.

Citywide, New American spots saw a median 1.2% increase in new reviews over the past month, but The Morning Fork saw a 33% increase, maintaining a superior 4.5-star rating throughout.

It's not the only trending outlier in the New American category: Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co has seen a 1.2% increase in reviews, and Crawdads On The River and Jimboy's Tacos have seen 0.5 and 2.7% increases, respectively.

Located at 1111 21st St. in Midtown/Capital Avenue, The Morning Fork offers traditional breakfast options of eggs and hash browns, along with crab and shrimp Benedict, a breakfast burger and cinnamon brioche French toast. For lunch, the eatery serves up a variety of sandwiches, with options of tuna salad, pulled pork and chicken. (See the full menu here.)

The Morning Fork is open from 7:30 a.m.–2 p.m. daily.

While businesses categorized as "Vegan" on Yelp saw a median 1.5% increase in new reviews over the past month, Burger Patch bagged a 17% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a strong four-star rating.

Open at 2301 K St. since 2017, Burger Patch serves up a variety of vegan burgers, alongside specialty milkshakes, which are made with cashew, almond and soy milk. Plant-based chicken and bacon strips are also on the menu.

Mansion Flats's Capital Hop Shop is also making waves. Open since Fall of 2017 at 1431 I St., the popular beer bar, gastropub and traditional American spot has seen a 7.4% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.4% for all businesses tagged "American (Traditional)" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis, Capital Hop Shop's review count increased by more than 400%.

There's more than one hot spot trending in Sacramento's traditional American category: The Other Side has seen a 7.8% increase in reviews.

Stop by to grab one of 30 beers on tap, and dig into Thai buffalo wings, spinach artichoke dip or the hot buttered pretzel, served with mustard and cheese sauce. In the mood for something heartier? This spot also serves a variety of sandwiches and salads. (View the menu here.)
