A new Japanese fast-casual spot has opened up shop in the neighborhood. Located at 137 Rivington St. on the Lower East Side, the new arrival is called Otaku Katsu.
Taking over the space of TongKatsu, this new spot offers a similar katsu-focused, counter-service concept. Otaku Katsu serves up five varieties of katsu, including classic katsu — with your choice of breaded and fried pork, chicken or fish — as well as vegetable katsu (seasonal veggies wrapped in yuba) and B.E.C. "Katsu," a combination of duck egg, bechamel sauce, smoked bacon and cheese. Katsus are available in bento boxes with rice and cabbage or in sandwich form. Also available are fresh-made onigiri, loaded fries and cones of soft serve for dessert.
With a four-star rating out of five reviews on Yelp so far, Otaku Katsu has already made a solid impression among clientele.
James D., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Sept. 24, wrote, "I'm in love with this place already. I had the Okonomiyaki fries, the Tonkatsu sando bento, the Yuzu Salmon Onigiri and the 'BEC' Katsu Egg. I have no complaints."
Yelper Kent L. added, "The katsu was very crispy with a lot of flavoring, and the setup of the place was very nice."
Otaku Katsu is open from noon-10 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from noon-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. (It's closed on Monday.)
