Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right now?
We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to analyze which eateries have been in the limelight this month.
To find out who made the list, we looked at New York City businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.
Read on to see which spots are riding a trend this autumn.
Hoek Pizza

Open since August, this pizzeria is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Pizza" on Yelp.
Citywide, pizza spots saw a median 2% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Hoek Pizza saw a dramatic 250% increase, with a downward trend from a five-star rating a month ago to 3.5 stars today.
Located at 117 Ferris St. (between Coffey and Van Dyke streets) in Red Hook, Hoek Pizza serves up Roman-style brick-oven pizza, made with a thin crust, fior di latte and mozzarella, and meat and veggie toppings. Situated in a renovated warehouse, this pizzeria also serves beer, wine and craft cocktails.
Hoek Pizza is open from 5–11 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday and noon–11 p.m. on weekends. (It's closed on Monday.)
Astoria Seafood and Grill

Astoria's Astoria Seafood and Grill is also making waves. Open since April at 25-79 Steinway St., the Mediterranean seafood restaurant has seen an imposing 113.6% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.6% for all businesses tagged "Mediterranean" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis, Astoria Seafood and Grill's review count increased by more than 310%.
Astoria Seafood and Grill specializes in Mediterranean-style seafood. On the menu, guests will find calamari, whole porgy, branzino, swordfish kebabs, grilled baby shark, fried sardines and more. Dishes are served with sides of rice, lemon potatoes, green salad and fries. Over the past month, the spot has maintained a superior 4.5-star rating among Yelpers.
Astoria Seafood and Grill is open from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. daily.
Harvest Kitchen

The Upper West Side's Harvest Kitchen is the city's buzziest New American spot by the numbers.
The restaurant, which opened at 269 Columbus Ave. (between 72nd and 73rd street) in June, increased its new review count by a remarkable 111.1% over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median new review count of 1.6% for the Yelp category "American (New)." It outperformed the previous month by gaining 4.3 times more reviews than expected based on past performance.
