A new gluten-free bakery and cafe has opened for business in the neighborhood. Called Le Gourmand, the fresh arrival is located at 104 W. 70th St. on the Upper West Side.
Taking over the storefront of Pain d’Épices, Le Gourmand extends that spot's gourmet French bakery concept, but with a gluten-free twist. Owner Mounir Jabrane, a former fitness trainer, became interested in gluten-free baking after learning of his son's gluten intolerance. At Le Gourmand, he sells his entirely gluten-free renditions of classics like croissants, macaroons and fresh fruit tarts, as well as cookies, cakes, muffins and scones. This spot also offers coffee, tea and sandwiches made on bread baked with millet and other gluten-free ancient grains.
With a 4.5-star rating out of 11 reviews on Yelp so far, Le Gourmand has been warmly received by patrons.
Tamar K., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Aug. 22, wrote, "So far, I've tried the chocolate cake, brownies, zucchini muffin and ginger turmeric bread. All seem moist, bouncy and flavorful. Things you normally don't say about gluten-free products."
Yelper Antoinette R. added, "Wow! What a fabulous new addition to the neighborhood. Absolutely delicious and super fresh gluten-free baked goods. Highly recommend!"
Interested? Le Gourmand is open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)
