Craving soul food?

Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the best affordable soul food sources in New Orleans, using both Yelp data and our own secret sauce to produce a ranked list of the best spots to venture when cravings strike.

1. Mchardy's Chicken & Fixin'

Topping the list is McHardy's Chicken & Fixin'. Located at 1458 N. Broad St. in Seventh Ward, the Southern spot, which offers soul food and more, is the highest-rated inexpensive soul food spot in New Orleans, boasting four stars out of 100 reviews on Yelp.

Yelper Cathy C., who reviewed McHardy's Chicken & Fixin' on July 17, wrote, "Great place for some excellent take-out fried chicken. It's crispy with a little bit of heat that doesn't overwhelm the taste of the chicken, and the breast meat is very tender and juicy. I also really liked their style of potato salad, very creamy with a nice vinegar tang."

Claire S. noted, "Pretty decent fried chicken place, more of a locals take-out joint than a place to visit. Notes: Take-out only (no seating inside). The noise level is super high from the fans/fryers. Food is hot, cheap and fast."

2. Catty Car Corner

Next up is Central Business District's Catty Car Corner, situated at 1340 Poydras St. With four stars out of 66 reviews on Yelp, the spot to score soul food has proven to be a local favorite for those looking for a low-priced option.

Yelper Kitty A., who reviewed Catty Car Corner on Sept. 13, wrote, "There was a line because it was lunchtime in the city, but the line moved quickly. The food was definitely worth it, tasted like it was straight from Momma's kitchen. The baked chicken, cabbage, the gumbo, the mashed potatoes (that was no box), even the club sandwich was good with that little crunch on the end of the toast."

Yelper Kathlyn A. wrote, "Do you like soul food? Do you like well-cooked food? Do you like cheap prices? Do you like large portion sizes? Then this is the place for you! During my stay [in] New Orleans, I frequently visited this restaurant."

3. Triangle Deli

Ask our many loyal regular customers and they will tell you, for the best po'boy sandwiches, stuffed bell pepper and macaroni, fried chicken and more, nobody in the Seventh Ward beats Triangle Deli for selection, taste, price or service!"

Old Gentilly Spicy Kitchen, a spot to score soul food and more in Desire, is another budget-friendly go-to, with four stars out of 36 Yelp reviews. Head over to 4058 Old Gentilly Road to see for yourself.

Yelper Shalon P., who reviewed Old Gentilly Spicy Kitchen on Aug. 23, wrote, "This is my go-to spot for home-cooked food. It's food my mom would make. They're the reason I don't cook. I don't have to. It's home-cooked and priced right."

Yelper Anthony N. wrote, "At first glance, I knew I was going to have leftovers for later. I definitely over-ordered, but I wanted to try everything! The red beans and rice was very filling and I loved the fried chicken. The fried chicken was simple, but nicely seasoned and fried. The cornbread was moist and tasty, it just melted in your mouth. The smothered pork chop was only an extra dollar to add to my entree and it was definitely worth it!"
