There's a new bakery in town. Taking over the former Iris Tea & Bakery space at 182-04 Horace Harding Expressway in Fresh Meadows, the new arrival is called Sunmerry Bakery Cafe.
This is the first New York City location of the Taiwanese bakery chain, which was founded in 1986 and has recently made inroads into the American market, first with shops in California, then in New Jersey and now Queens. Sunmerry Bakery Cafe offers 80 different kinds of baked goods, including breads, pastries and savory Asian buns. Stop in for loaves of brioche and Portuguese-style bolo bread; cream and roll cakes (available whole or by the slice); green tea croissants; or for red bean buns and curry doughnuts.
With a three-star rating out of 10 reviews on Yelp so far, the new bakery has received mixed feedback — but it's still early days.
Harris L., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Nov. 29, wrote, "Sunmerry seems to produce creative, more relatable and reasonably-priced Asian-influenced adaptations of Western pastries ... [It] could be more mindful of customer service."
Yelper Lillian L. added, “This might one day, become my favorite Asian pastry shop, if they ever get their act together. Opened for several months now, they still have an issue with not enough pastries on the shelves. They are also suffering from lack of consistency (size, taste, presentation) on some of their baked goods."
Sunmerry Bakery Cafe is now open, so swing on by to take a peek.
