1. Tony's Pizza & Pasta
First up is Tony's Pizza & Pasta, which offers an extensive menu of Italian favorites in a casual space. The neighborhood spot at 10233 E. Northwest Highway stands out among the local restaurants that are popular with your neighbors. While the average eatery has 60 Nextdoor recommendations, Tony's has racked up a whopping 558 and was voted a 2019 Neighborhood Favorite in 34 Dallas neighborhoods.
Pizza lovers can indulge in pies like the Florentine with spinach, sliced tomatoes and mushrooms or the White Wonder, which is covered in ricotta, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. The menu also features classic dishes such as chicken Marsala, veal parmigiana, rigatoni with vodka sauce and linguini with clam sauce. Finish off the meal with cheesecake, cannoli or tiramisu.
2. Dream Cafe
Next up is Dream Cafe, a Dallas mainstay since 1988 that serves up an eclectic mix of fresh, locally sourced fare at 6465 E. Mockingbird Lane. The family-run eatery, which has received a healthy 443 recommendations and is a 2019 Neighborhood Favorite in 32 neighborhoods, has a second outpost in Uptown.
In the morning, look for biscuits and pancetta gravy, granola-crusted French toast with fresh strawberries and crème fraiche and an eggs Benedict dish with jumbo lump crab cakes. Later in the day, the menu includes a pesto chicken sandwich, an assortment of salads and burgers and roasted acorn squash stuffed with brown rice, pecans, currants and goat cheese.
3. Scalini's Pizza and Pasta
Another popular spot is Scalini's Pizza and Pasta, which has garnered 438 Nextdoor recommendations and was selected by neighbors as a 2019 Neighborhood Favorite in 26 neighborhoods. The cozy eatery at 2021 Abrams Road has a full menu of pizza, sandwiches and pasta.
Current menu offerings include chicken piccata, pan-seared salmon and an Alfredo pizza topped with shrimp, sun-dried tomatoes and scallions. Beer and wine are available for those who dine in and for delivery.
4. Mariano's Hacienda
Craving Mexican fare? Then look no further than the iconic Mariano's Hacienda at 6300 Skillman St., which has been recommended by 420 neighbors and was named a 2019 Nextdoor Favorite in 40 Dallas neighborhoods. The Texas restaurant group, which has five other outposts, got its start in 1971. It was founded by Mariano Martinez, who is credited as the inventor of the frozen margarita machine, according to Smithsonian magazine.
As you'd expect, margaritas are still a popular item, including The Mariano made with Don Julio Reposado, lime and orange liqueur, and the Fire & Ice with lime and jalapeños.
At dinnertime, start off with housemade queso and move on to signature entrees like pan-seared tilapia with cilantro or a flame-roasted poblano stuffed with grilled chicken and Monterey Jack cheese.
5. Liberty Burger
And then there's Liberty Burger at 1904 Abrams Parkway. The neighborhood burger joint, which earned 404 Nextdoor recommendations and enough votes to be selected as a 2019 Neighborhood Favorite in 29 neighborhoods, has four other Texas locations and one in Wyoming.
The family-owned business pledges "to be a restaurant with high-quality food, social contribution and environmental responsibility." As part of this philosophy, the restaurant crafts a new burger each month, donating a dollar from each sale to a charitable organization. This month's creation is the Bacon Blue Cheese Burger, which features a bacon-and-Gorgonzola stuffed patty, spiced onion strings and Sriracha aioli.
Nontraditional burgers are also on offer, including one topped with seared and ground ahi tuna, sesame slaw and wasabi aioli. On the side, try sweet potato fries, loaded thick-cut curly fries or a salad.
