There's a brand-new fusion restaurant in town. Located at 724 Ninth St. NW in Penn Quarter, the fresh addition is called Cranes.

The Spanish-Japanese restaurant features tapas, including Iberico ham with cocoa bread, duck dumplings and sous vide egg with chorizo. A six-course prix fixe omakase menu is also offered. Desserts include an ice cream sandwich with purple yam, chocolate and coconut.

With a 4.5 rating out of 10 reviews on Yelp so far, the new arrival is on its way to developing a local fan base.

Nathaniel W., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Feb. 16, wrote, "Tapas-style highlights included the grilled shrimp with black garlic purée, scallops with bacon chips, short rib bao buns, patatas bravas, nameko and enoki mushroom rice, and the yuzu curd tart with mandarin orange sorbet to finish."

And Paloma R. added, “The leaves and roots salad was a clear standout to me. Salads are usually boring, but this one was super fresh. The veggies were packed with flavor, the dressing was nice and light. I love the bao buns as well. You can never go wrong with patatas bravas, but their version had an interesting presentation. ”

Intrigued? Stop in to try it for yourself. Cranes is open from 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. daily for lunch. Dinner hours are from 5–10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 5–11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
