A new bar and Japanese-Italian restaurant has opened up shop in the neighborhood. The fresh arrival to Chinatown, called Tonari, is located at 707 Sixth St. NW.

Tonari specializes in wafu pasta, which is pasta tossed with Japanese ingredients. It features uni pasta, made with sea urchin and a mentaiko — salted roe — and corn pizza, and grapefruit granité for dessert.

The new addition has gotten off to a solid start thus far, with a four-star rating out of four reviews on Yelp.

Frannie Y., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Feb. 8, wrote, "I thought Tonari was delicious. This isn't a fusion restaurant but rather wafu Italian, which has been around for a while. We got the cold tofu, which has the most amazing soft texture that was even more silky and soft than silken tofu."

And Winnie C. wrote, "I think the Japanese and Italian fusion is a great concept, however, the portions are a bit small for the menu price. The tomato sauce for the pepperoni pizza is yum, it's got the umami taste on top with a tad bit of sweetness to it. The pasta has a great texture but hardly any uni to it."

Intrigued? Stop in to try it for yourself. Tonari is open from 5–10 p.m. on Sunday-Friday and and 5 p.m.–midnight on Saturday.
