A new high-rise project being worked up by well-known architect Jeanne Gang and her firm Studio Gang is now being pitched for approval in downtown San Jose. The tower is being developed by Canadian developer Westbank and local development firm Urban Community, which has several high-rise projects in the works in Silicon Valley. The name of the building is Terraine, because of its location at Terraine Street and Bassett Street just a few blocks north of downtown San Jose’s popular San Pedro Square.

The 17-story housing tower would create 319 apartment units along with an equally visually striking, eight-story parking structure that would hold more than 650 cars. The tower would be dotted with large balconies, corner windows, green spaces, and gathering areas. The Mercury News reports that “two green features with open gathering areas would be developed in the space between the housing high-rise and the parking garage. Along Terraine Street at the ground level, a pocket park would be accessible to the public. That park would be connected by a staircase to another pocket park that would have some public space as well as private space for the tower’s residents.”

Global architecture firm Studio Gang, which is best-known in the Bay Area for designing the twisted-looking building in downtown San Francisco called Mira, has been tapped to provide the blueprints for Terraine, which appear to be still in the concept stages of design.

The features of the building are meant to take advantage of Silicon Valley’s pleasant weather. “Informed by the unique climate and geology of Northern California’s Santa Clara Valley, Terraine is a residential tower designed to maximize the experience of indoor/outdoor living in downtown San Jose with a minimal carbon footprint,” Studio Gang says on its website.

Studio Gang has also put forth plans for a proposed office building called Arbor that sits next to Terraine making the new housing options ideal for people who work inside Arbor. “Arbor's prominent position at the northwestern edge of downtown San Jose signals the next stage of Silicon Valley's evolution, welcoming visitors and residents to a city that is reembracing the rich ecological mosaic of the Santa Clara Valley,” Studio Gang says on its website.

Terraine is expected to have four retail spaces on its ground floor which feature more than 12,000 square feet of space. The project remains in the early planning stages with the city of San Jose and there’s no word yet when full approval could be expected.
