Wedding bells are ringing louder than ever as we settle into 2023, but so is the sound of money leaving couples' bank accounts, with the average cost of a wedding soaring to a staggering $29,000 nationally, according to Zola. This is a $1,000 increase from the previous year but if you thought that was a lot, hold onto your wedding hats and veils because weddings in the San Francisco-Bay Area, specifically, are reaching incredible heights of their own.
A recent CNN report revealed that weddings in the Bay Area have reached an average cost of around $37,284, trailing only behind the notoriously expensive New York City at a jaw-dropping $43,536. The reasons for these increased costs are attributed to the usual suspects: inflation and the demand for wedding-related goods and services surpassing supply.
With the COVID-19 pandemic having halted celebrations for a considerable amount of time, the wedding industry has been booming since its revival in 2022. This resurgence in demand for venues, photographers, wedding planners, and other wedding necessities has led to vendors raising their rates to keep up with the ever-growing need for their products and services.
This sharp uptick in wedding costs correlates with an increasing trend towards unique, highly customized weddings among couples. Millennials and Gen-Zers are no longer satisfied with conventional wedding settings, instead opting for underwater ceremonies or antiquities-themed events. The Knot's deputy editor, Esther Lee, states that "unique weddings are having a moment with the onset of hyper-personalization, meaning couples are drawing out influences most meaningful to them and infusing these touches into their wedding day details."
While unique wedding styles may offer cost-saving options, such as reusing vintage dresses, customizations also have the potential to inflate costs significantly. Alternative wedding themes, like underwater ceremonies, are gaining popularity, with Pinterest reporting a 305% jump in searches for underwater weddings on their platform.
As couples across the country and particularly in the Bay Area plan their special day, it's essential to keep an eye on guest numbers. Zola's report reveals that most couples are expecting between 130-150 guests at their 2023 weddings. However, as Lee pointed out, the guest list tends to be tighter, with about "39% of couples trimming their guest list" for 2023, as compared to the previous average of 117 guests in 2022.
So, who is footing the bill for these extravagant events? The same Zola survey demonstrates that 33% of couples report contributing to their wedding budgets in some way, with 16% covering the entire cost of their nuptials. Couples in 2023 are making use of various financial strategies to cover the hefty price tags on their weddings, such as credit card optimization (29%), saving for years (26%), or using cash funds from their registries (24%).
While the wedding industry enjoys its current surge, it's interesting to consider whether this trend of high costs and extravagant ceremonies will continue. The CNN report points out that the rate of new engagements has declined due to fewer people meeting their potential partners during the pandemic years. This could mean a dip in the wedding industry's momentum in the future.
