A third person has been arrested in connection with a brutal beating at a Greenfield birthday party earlier this month, as police say a minor now faces attempted murder charges alongside two adult suspects already in custody. The victim was left with a broken jaw, missing teeth, and serious head injuries after a video showed him being stomped in the head at least 11 times while unconscious in the street.
Greenfield officers responded to the 200 block of Bianco Way at 10:09 PM last Friday after reports of possible gunshots, arriving to find a party attended by people ranging from 15 to 20 years old, according to KSBW. The gathering was thrown for a 19-year-old Greenfield woman's birthday, and roughly seven to 10 people were involved in the fight that left the victim beaten and robbed, investigators believe. Video obtained by police showed multiple people kicking and stomping an unconscious man in the head and torso, and the outlet reports the victim was taken to a local trauma center with serious head injuries.
Police say the same video evidence showed the victim was also struck in the head multiple times with a firearm during the attack, and as of late August, the weapon has not been recovered, according to the Greenfield Police Department. The victim told investigators he did not remember what the fight was about because he lost consciousness during the attack.
Three Suspects, Escalating Charges
18-year-old Arturo Robles Gonzalez was the first arrested and remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail last Saturday with bail set at $1,040,000 on charges of attempted murder and robbery, per booking records from Recently Booked. KSBW reports that a juvenile suspect pistol-whipped the victim and has since been charged with attempted murder.
18-year-old Jeremiah Joel Rodriguez was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury, and participating in a criminal street gang, the station's report notes. Formal charges booked or requested against Rodriguez and the 16-year-old juvenile include attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, robbery, conspiracy, and gang and firearm enhancements, according to the police department. Detectives also requested additional charges against Robles Gonzalez. Police identified all three arrested individuals as the primary aggressors and as known gang members.
Under California Penal Code Section 186.22, a gang enhancement charge requires prosecutors to prove a felony was committed for the benefit of or in association with a criminal street gang, and it carries mandatory consecutive prison terms ranging from two years to life, according to the Shouse Law Group. That means any prison sentence tied to the gang enhancement would be added on top of, not folded into, whatever time the suspects receive for the underlying attempted murder and assault charges.
Search Warrants Served in Salinas
The multi-day investigation drew coordinated assistance from the Salinas Police Department, King City Police Department, Seaside Police Department K9 Unit, Monterey County Probation Department, and Monterey County Sheriff's Office, the Greenfield Police Department said. Detectives executed residential search warrants in the 700 block of Garner Way and the 18000 block of Lenny Street in Salinas to recover evidence connected to the assault, and those warrants yielded physical evidence tied to the ongoing case.
Investigators say the underage house party on Bianco Way was widely promoted on social media platforms, including Snapchat, before the gathering, according to the Salinas Valley Tribune. That promotion appears to explain how attendees and suspects from outside Greenfield, including those from Salinas, ended up at the party. Police also received reports of underage drinking and are examining the house party, including the roles of responsible adults and property owners who may have hosted or allowed the gathering.
Social Host Rules Could Come Into Play
South Monterey County municipalities, including Greenfield and neighboring Gonzales, have adopted Social Host Ordinances designed to hold adults and property owners civilly or criminally liable for permitting underage drinking on their property, the Tribune reported in 2017. That local framework helps explain why detectives are scrutinizing who, if anyone, allowed the party to happen in the first place, though no property owner has been named or charged as of this reporting.
Police are still seeking additional video and witnesses, and bystanders have been asked to submit footage through the Greenfield Police Department's Evidence.com community portal. Part of a Wider Pattern in South County
The Bianco Way attack lands amid a string of gang-linked violence tied to house parties across South Monterey County, a pattern Hoodline has previously reported includes a March 2024 mass shooting at a King City house party that left four dead and seven wounded. In those earlier cases, investigators noted that innocent partygoers were often caught up in broader gang feuds rather than being direct targets themselves.
The case also comes as Monterey County leaders pursue federal grant funding to expand Automated License Plate Reader camera networks across South County cities, including Greenfield, specifically to help police investigate gang violence. Greenfield already uses Flock Safety ALPR cameras linked to regional law enforcement databases, a technology push Hoodline detailed earlier this month. Whether the outstanding firearm will be recovered, whether property owners face charges, and whether more suspects seen in bystander video will be arrested remain open questions as the investigation continues.
